„The system was constructed just to kill them, and I don’t want them to die.“ – Ein Bericht aus Lesbos

Migrantion wird kriminalisiert und die Küstenwache arbeitet eng mit der europäischen Grenzschutzagentur Frontex zusammen. In den vergangenen Jahren haben sich die Situation auf der Insel und die Arbeit von Freiwilligen, NGOs und autonomen Organisationen stark verändert. Die VON UNTEN Redaktion war von 15. bis 19. Januar zu Gast bei unserem Kooperationsradio Radio VC Mytilene auf Lesvos. Dort haben wir mit Journalist:innen, Anwält:innen und sich autonom organisierenden Menschen von unterschiedlichen Initiativen gesprochen, um herauszufinden, wie sich die Lage für People on the Move, Freiwillige und Organisationen entwickelt. Zunächst hört ihr Ozan Mirkan Balpetek vom Legal Center Lesvos und Serife Ceren Uysal von der European Association of Lawyers for Democracy and World Human Rights. Sie berichten über ihre Arbeit auf der Insel und erklären, warum Weitermachen für sie keine Frage der Motivation ist, sondern Teil eines selbstverständlichen Kampfes gegen ein mörderisches System. Anschließend erzählt der Journalist Hibai Arbide Aza von paramilitärischen Gruppen, die illegale und brutale Pushbacks durchführen, wie sich die Situation auf der Insel stetig verschlimmert - und davon, woher er die Energie nimmt, trotz immer widrigerer Bedingungen weiterzumachen. Zum Abschluss berichtet Maria von No Border Kitchen, wie sich die Arbeit der autonomen Gruppe in den letzten Jahren verändert hat, wie viele Menschen sie mit Essen versorgen und was es für sie bedeutet, durch wöchentliche Treffen Gemeinschaften zwischen Gruppen zu schaffen, die sonst keine Berührungspunkte hätten. Migrants are criminalized, and the coast guard works closely with the European border protection agency, Frontex. Over the past few years, the situation on the island and the work of volunteers, NGOs, and autonomous organizations have changed significantly. The VON UNTEN editorial team visited our partner radio station, Radio VC Mytilene, on Lesvos from January 15 to 19. There, we spoke with journalists, lawyers, and autonomously organized individuals from various initiatives to find out how the situation for People on the Move, volunteers, and organizations has evolved—and what it currently looks like. First, you will hear from Ozan Mirkan Balpetek of the Legal Center Lesvos and Serife Ceren Uysal of the European Association of Lawyers for Democracy and World Human Rights.
